KEWEENAW COUNTY, Mich. — The Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s help after more than 80 emergency trail signs were stolen or vandalized on local snowmobile and ATV routes, putting riders at risk.
The green location markers, installed about every half mile, help deputies, Keweenaw Search and Rescue and local fire departments quickly find injured or lost riders — a task made harder in poor weather or low visibility. Without the signs, response times can be delayed.
“These signs aren’t just markers—they’re lifelines,” said Sheriff Curt Pennala. “Their removal is not only reckless, it endangers lives. We need the public’s help to both restore them and find out who’s responsible.”
The signs were originally installed with donations and volunteer labor. The sheriff’s office has launched a fundraising effort to replace damaged markers with more durable, theft-resistant aluminum versions. Donations can be made via the GoFundMe campaign.
Officials are asking residents to donate, report suspicious activity or any information about the vandalism, and share the fundraiser to spread the word. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Office at 906-201-8428.
