LANSING, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Upper Peninsula now has more certified radon contractors than ever before, following the addition of two new providers in Au Train and Ishpeming. The total number of certified contractors in the region has increased from three to five, representing a 67% rise over last year.
The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) says the new certifications are a direct result of the first-ever radon mitigation training course offered in the U.P., held last September in Marquette. Les Smith, EGLE’s indoor radon specialist, says the new coverage will help fill gaps in service across the peninsula’s large geographic area.
Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that can’t be seen, smelled, or tasted. Long-term exposure can increase the risk of lung cancer, and one in four Michigan homes is expected to have levels above the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s action limit.
Do-it-yourself radon test kits are available at many local health departments, and certified contractors are also available for testing and mitigation. A full list of certified providers can be found at Michigan.gov/Radon.
