MARQUETTE TWP., Mich. (WZMQ) – The Chairman of the Michigan Democratic Party, Curtis Hertel, spoke to nearly 100 Democrats and potential Democrats. He also fielded questions from those assembled. Of highest concern is how to gain seats lost in Congress, and what the party stands for.
“It’s our job to fight for the fair wages that happen in this country. It’s our job to fight for affordable housing, to lower the cost of health care for everybody, and lower the cost of childcare,” said Hertel.
Another talking point was the redistricting in Texas and the spread of gerrymandering
“Once you start, there is no end. That’s the problem. Every state that can do it will do it down the line. It’s worse for voters. Worse for people,” said Hertel.
Hertel also pointed out some serious concerns about how strong the party is.
“I’m tired of the Democratic Party playing weak. And if Republicans are going to cheat and break the rules, then we’re going to go ahead and gerrymander back too,” said Hertel.
“First time. Attendee at a town hall meeting, Amanda Holman, thought the content lacked substance.
“I have a lot of concerns about what, aside from voting in two years, which I intend to do? What can I do right now this year? What are my opportunities now?”
“I think I’m leaving satisfied, mostly because I learned that my local community has this, this group of people who really value a lot of the things I do,” said attendee Tori Wyth.
The town hall meeting was civil and hopefully answered some tough questions.
