ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – The first day saw large crowds and all the traditional fair staples, like exciting rides, food of all kinds, farm animals, and, of course, the crowning of the Queen and her two princesses. For the newly appointed Queen of the Fair, Macy Hanson. It’s quite an honor.
“I’m just like, really happy and really proud, I guess, like, I don’t know, I feel like I worked hard on my essay and stuff in my autobiography. So I’m just really happy,” said Hanson
Each contestant was interviewed by the judges and submitted an essay of their choosing. Most of these girls are active in 4H and have an agrarian upbringing.
For lead judge and Jousma-Miller, it’s all about character.
“This is our future. We’re so proud of the Upper Peninsula State Fair, and we hear so many things about young people and all of the problems that they have. These girls really step up, and we can look forward to them being our representatives for the future,” said Jousma-Miller.
The Crown royalty will act as Goodwill Ambassadors throughout the fair, as well as present ribbons for the various competitions.
“Yeah, I’ll be handing out ribbons and walking around. Do you have animals yourself? I do, I have a steer,” said Hanson.
Our own. Lily. Simmons was the emcee of the crowning ceremony and did a terrific job. WZMQ 19 News is a proud sponsor of the UP State Fair.
