MARQUETTE COUNTY, Mich. — The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office is alerting residents that members of the U.S. Army will conduct military training in Marquette County and the Keweenaw Peninsula from Aug. 10-17.
The exercises will include air mobility operations and ground-based close quarter battle training. Officials say the training is not in response to any real-world events and will follow robust safety precautions to protect participants and residents.
The Army says the Upper Peninsula’s unique terrain offers valuable training opportunities that simulate conditions troops may encounter during deployment.
“We have more of a northern climate, so it’s a little cooler than it is in the southern part of the United States for them to train in,” said Marquette County Undersheriff Lowell Larson. “We also have a former air force base that they can utilize, so it’s just a great opportunity for us to have them in our area, and it’s a great opportunity for them as well.”
The Army says no public viewing opportunities are planned, but residents may notice increased noise in and around controlled areas of training during the evening and early morning hours.
