ALGER COUNTY, Mich. (WZMQ) – First responders in Alger County rescued two fishermen who went overboard in Lake Superior over the weekend.

At approximately 12:45 p.m. on Saturday, the Alger County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call from a Tribal fisherman advising that he and a friend were on a vessel that had overturned in Lake Superior approximately five miles northwest of Au Train Island. The caller said they were staying afloat with assistance from debris that fell from the vessel.

Alger County Rescue 21, the Pictured Rocks National Park Service, and the U.S. Coast Guard were immediately dispatched. Several other private vessels assisted well. The two subjects were rescued by members of the Alger County Rescue 21 team that responded in their personal boat.

The victims declined medical evaluation or treatment. Their names are not being released at this time.

The incident is being investigated by the DNR Law Enforcement Division. Other assisting agencies included the Michigan State Police, the DNR, and the US Forest Service Law Enforcement Division.
