MANISTIQUE, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Schoolcraft Conservation District is making Manistique a greener place to live.
The District has planted ten varieties of trees at local parks and campgrounds, along sidewalks, and in front of buildings like the Schoolcraft County Courthouse. The project is thanks to an Urban and Community Forestry grant, which allowed the district to plant 21 full-size trees.
Conservation District Communications Coordinator Sara Solberg says in addition to beautifying the city, the trees create new spaces where wildlife can thrive.
“Manistique is surrounded by a lot of forests—including the National Hiawatha Forest—but in town, we are a bit lacking in wildlife habitats,” she said. “It’s also good for people! It provides shade in different parks, and it provides different health benefits.”
Through a Michigan Invasive Species Grant, the District has also been decontaminating boats in Schoolcraft and Delta Counties. District staff teach boaters about ways to prevent the spread of invasive species.
