NEGAUNEE, Mich. — Voters in Negaunee headed to the polls Tuesday to weigh in on a proposed sinking fund millage renewal for Negaunee Public Schools.
The renewal, would allow the district to continue using funds for transportation improvements, school building repairs and upgrades, and enhanced security measures. The sinking fund has been a key source of infrastructure funding for the district in recent years.
Polls remained open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., and officials reported a steady turnout throughout the day. As of Monday afternoon, nearly 600 absentee ballots had been returned.
Silas McNeally, a Negaunee resident who voted Tuesday, said he believes many residents showed up because they see the schools as a vital part of the community.
“Negaunee prides itself on its schools, and it’s worth investing in that point of pride to bring people to the community, bring jobs, and bring families,” McNeally said. “People care about their schools pretty deeply; they care about their community.”
Election results were not yet available as of Tuesday night. WZMQ will continue to provide updates as they are released.
