Champion Township votes on Millage Renewals

CHAMPION TWP, Mich. (WZMQ) – This week, Champion Township hopes to keep its funding steady, as the community voted whether or not to renew three key millages in the August 5 special election.

These include current standings in its General Fund Operating Millage of 5.00 mills ($5.00 per $1,000 of taxable property value), Financing Emergency Medical Services of 1.00 mills ($1.00 per $1,000 of taxable property value), and the Road Fund Repair and Maintenance millage of 2.00 mills ($2.00 per $1,000 of taxable property value).

Throughout the day, the Champion Township Hall saw a lighter amount of voters than it would at a regular election. This is commonly expected with a millage vote, but voting staff still highly reflected on its importance.

“We started at 7 a.m., it’s been kind of light so far today, not many people show up for millage stuff as they should, because it’s part of your taxes,” said Election Inspector, Samuel Gatewood. “It’s pretty important stuff, people need to come out here, get out and vote.”

If passed, the renewals would be in place from 2026 through 2030. Without a passing renewal, the vote may need to be readdressed in the fall, with probable changes making their way to the ballots as well.

“If this passes, this will allow us to continue on as as we have been,” said Champion Township Supervisor, Mike Simula. “If it didn’t pass, we do a little head scratching, and maybe have to come back to the voters at a different time.”

Results of Tuesday’s special election throughout the county will be announced in the near future.
