Lake Effect Community Arts Center offers creative classes for everyone

MANISTIQUE, Mich. (WZMQ) – This month, Manistique’s Lake Effect Community Arts Center is hosting creative classes for all.

Of Curious Nature Candle Co. is leading a candle pouring workshop on August 14, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. The workshop is limited to twelve spots and costs $35 per person. Participants will take two candles home with them.

On August 16, Lake Effect will host An Introduction to Zentangle with Emy Goosen, a certified Zentangle teacher, at noon. Zentangle is a relaxing way to bring designs to life one stroke at a time. The class is intended for artists ages 8 and older and costs $25 per person.

Beginner painters can also enjoy a Sip & Paint event with Andrea Marks on August 23. They will create a seascape with acrylic paints while learning the technique of underpainting. The class runs from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and costs $30 per person.

Lake Effect staff say hosting workshops like these is an essential part of what the Arts Center is all about. “It really livens up the space and brings joy to the building,” said Operations Manager Katie Birdsley. “We have a class happening right now, and it really gets people inside our building to see that we’re not just a gallery, we’re not just an exhibit, we’re not just a meeting space. We are all of these things. We are a community space, and we’re meant for everyone.”

There are still a few spots available for Lake Effect’s August 6th class, Collage Quilting with Lyne Lejeune. The cost to attend is $50, and materials are included. The class runs from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

“Our participants will take different pieces of fabric and they’ll use them to paint,” Birdsley explained. “There’s no sewing required. They’ll use different shades of color to create a pumpkin that you can use as a table runner, a wall hanging, a pillow.”

To register for any of these classes, visit lakeeffectarts.org. For updates on future classes, follow the Lake Effect Community Arts Facebook page.
