MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Friends of Marquette’s Peter White Public Library and Snowbound Books welcomed Michigan Secretary of State and gubernatorial candidate Jocelyn Benson for an intimate evening centered around her new memoir, “The purposeful warrior: Standing up for what’s right when the stakes are high”.
“One central theme of this book is, though you may live in turbulent times, only you have the power to define how you’re going to walk through those turbulent times, to not abdicate your power or your voice to anyone else,” said Benson.
Benson opened the evening by reading select excerpts from the book, rooted in her journey from voter rights advocate to statewide office holder, and framed by her belief in democratic principles and values driven leadership.
“My question to those who read this is, what are you going to do to improve our community, to improve our state, to fight for those you love and fight for yourself as well,” explained Benson.
A Q and A session followed where Benson engaged the attendees on topics ranging from civic participation to her vision for Michigan’s future and what the Marquette area means to her.
“For me, Marquette is the best of Michigan. To me, investing in the economic prosperity and growth of our residents here in the UP is as critical as any other part of the state,” said Benson.
This stop in Marquette is part of Benson’s broader statewide “Thrive in Michigan” Tour, combining her new memoir launch with a series of public forums across the state,
“Whatever we define as our purpose, we can fight for that with all of our might and ensure we’re not allowing anyone to take away our voice,” exclaimed Benson.
After the discussion. There was a book signing, where Benson, signed copies of her memoir. For those unable to attend, the program will be available on The Peter White Public Library’s YouTube channel.
