NEGAUNEE, Mich. — The Michigan Iron Industry Museum is highlighting local history through its ongoing Tuesday Afternoon Program series, featuring presentations and films about the Upper Peninsula’s past.
This week, the museum screened One Day Longer, a documentary by local historian Andy Skewis that focuses on the 1990-93 Marquette Iron Range strikes. The film explores one of the region’s most significant labor disputes and the impact it had on mining communities.
“This one is particularly special because it is within living memory,” said Andrew Semak, a museum aid with the Michigan Iron Industry Museum. “We have several miners who were a part of this strike or have direct family members who were part of this strike who remember this strike happening, I saw several of them here today. They can come and learn more about that particular time and revisit that time on the Marquette Iron Range.”
The museum plans to continue its Tuesday Afternoon Programs with three more events scheduled for Aug. 5, 12 and 19.
