MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – A blood drive for first responders was held at the U.P. Regional Blood Center on Wednesday.
One pint of blood can save up to three lives, and as blood is often difficult to obtain by medical staffing throughout the Upper Peninsula, multiple levels of dispatch in the Marquette area came to give blood for the cause.
Organizer and Emergency Dispatcher Kristi Carello says the day had an impressive turnout, especially at this time of year.
“In the summertime, it’s harder to get people to come in and donate because they’re on vacation, but it’s also a time where there’s a huge need,” said Carello. “There are people that aren’t from the area coming up here to vacation, they get into accidents and need blood products, and it’s important for us to have a supply here that our people can utilize.”
Each participant in the blood drive was entered into a raffle drawing featuring contributions from local businesses including Ore Dock Brewery, Donkers, and Lake Superior Smoke House, as a thank you for their aid.
