Negaunee Public Schools proposes new sinking fund millage, adjustments to transportation funds

NEGAUNEE, Mich. (WZMQ) – A new Michigan law now permits school districts to use its sinking funds towards transportation purposes. This includes Negaunee Public Schools, proposing an expansion on its sinking fund millage in early August.

The millage proposes advances in security, building reconstruction, and a new focus on student transportation, including school buses and various maintenance costs.

“That’s ultimately the reason that it appears as a new proposal. A sinking fund renewal, because our current sinking fund is scheduled to expire, would require that language to remain the same,” said Negaunee Superintendent, Andy Skewis. “Since we want to add the new aspect of transportation purchases now allowed by law, we have to propose it to voters as a new sinking fund.”

If passed, the sinking fund would set aside money over the next ten years. The millage would annually amount to around 2.45 mills from 2027 through 2036.

“The sinking fund is something that gives us predictability,” said Skewis. “It allows us to take general funds and focus on the most impacts directly on student instruction and things of that nature.”

Past sinking funds have repaired roofing, windows, flooring, locker replacements, upgrade heating systems, and more. The regular maintenance is crucial to keeping a school district up to date and safe for those involved.

“Keeping those things in proper working condition is essential to the success of our district,” said Skewis.

The vote will take place on August 5 in the Negaunee Middle School Gymnasium, and is the only millage currently set on the ballot.
