Fair Food Network brings Double Up Food Bucks to Marquette to support healthy eating, local farmers

MARQUETTE, Mich. — A national food assistance nonprofit is making a stop in the Upper Peninsula this week to raise awareness about a program that helps families stretch their grocery budgets while supporting local farmers.

Representatives from the Fair Food Network will be at the Marquette Food Co-op on Wednesday, July 17, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. to share information about the “Double Up Food Bucks” program. The initiative provides a dollar-for-dollar match on fresh produce for individuals using SNAP benefits, allowing families to purchase more healthy food at participating retailers.

The event aims to educate U.P. residents about the program’s availability and how it can benefit both shoppers and the regional agricultural economy.

“How shoppers shop in the U.P. is different than other parts of the state,” said Rachel Hoh, Michigan Director of Double Up Food Bucks. “Shoppers have to drive further to go to their grocery stores, so we want shoppers to know that when you make the trip there will be this match available for you, so shoppers can participate in this program that benefits their families, benefits farmers, and benefits the local economy.”

In addition to program resources, the Marquette Food Co-op will also host activities for children throughout the day.

Double Up Food Bucks is available at grocery stores and farmers markets across Michigan. More information about eligible locations and benefits can be found at www.doubleupfoodbucks.org.
