ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – In recognition of National Vehicle Theft Prevention Month, the Michigan State Police (MSP) are reminding motorists to protect their property.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than 850,000 vehicles were stolen in the United States in 2024. In Michigan, more than 21,600 vehicles were reported as stolen. However, MSP Director Colonel James F. Grady II says vehicle theft rates in Michigan have dropped by 15% since 2023.
“We are trending in the right direction,” he said. “I think it is a collaboration of multiple partnerships. The State Police actually has two auto theft teams. Those troopers, the investigators, our local partners, we’re doing the work out there trying to reduce auto theft in this state.”
Despite the decline, it is still a widespread issue. To prevent theft, MSP recommends parking in well-lit areas, locking doors and windows, and hiding valuable items. Motorists can also equip their cars with alarms to deter thieves.
Additionally, motorists are advised not to leave keys inside their cars. One mistake many people make is leaving a vehicle running and walking away.
“Sometimes people’s vehicles are stolen right out of their driveway because they’re wanting to leave the vehicle running,” said Grady. “Even without the key fob in there, there have been instances where vehicles are still stolen because the car is running.”
Grady urges all motorists to be aware of their surroundings and to do what they can to keep their vehicles and possessions safe.
“All of the work that law enforcement professionals do day in and day out is never going to be enough,” he said. “If you see something, say something. Get that information to your local law enforcement agency or call the State Police so that we can prevent auto theft here in the future. It takes everybody to reduce this type of criminal activity.”
If a vehicle is stolen, MSP says it is critical to call authorities immediately. Victims should also alert their insurance providers within 24 hours.
