NEGAUNEE, Mich. (WZMQ) — After a busy Pioneer Days schedule, the Negaunee Public Library is keeping the momentum going with three community-focused events this week.
On Tuesday at 5:30 p.m., guest presenter Mary Harris will lead a “junk journal” workshop. Participants will create personalized journals using old or damaged books that are no longer part of the library’s collection.
“People will be able to take home what they create,” said Jessica Holman, Director of the Negaunee Public Library. “It’s a great way to reuse some old books… a great way for young people and adults to make something cool.”
The activities continue Wednesday morning at 10:30 a.m. with a visit from the Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum. The museum will present “Cold Blooded Classifications,” a hands-on experience for kids to learn about insects, reptiles, amphibians, and possibly even arachnids.
“It’s a great time to bring the kids in and have a fun time,” Holman said. “Some of the animals they’ll even be able to meet and touch.”
Later that evening at 6 p.m., PBS puppet Wimee and creator Kevin Kammeraad will host an interactive program filled with stories, songs, and educational fun for younger children.
“While we are a library and we want to be reading,” Holman said, “we do also want to emphasize the fact that we are an educational and also a community center where people can have fun and enrich their lives.”
The library encourages families and community members to attend and take advantage of the free programming. More information can be found on the Negaunee Public Library Facebook Page. The library also asks that anyone planning to attend the junk journal workshop reach out and RSVP beforehand if possible.
