ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – The City of Escanaba is seeking nominations for a big election this November.
Three City Council members—Mayor Mark Ammel, Ronald Beauchamp, and Todd Flath—will complete their terms at the end of the year. Potential candidates for those seats must submit nominating petitions with at least 50 signatures from registered Escanaba voters by July 22. Once those signatures are verified, the candidate’s name will be added to the ballot.
Presidential and state elections tend to get the biggest voter turnouts each fall. However, Escanaba City Clerk Phil DeMay says it is important for citizens to have a voice in their local government as well.
“This affects local policy, local legislation,” he said. “Your Council members are the ones that approve and possibly deny new ordinances and resolutions. It’s a very important position.”
Nominating petitions are available at the City Clerk’s Office, located inside City Hall at 410 Ludington Street, and at the County Clerk’s Office at 310 Ludington Street. Petitions can be turned in at either office when completed.
