Exploring the Wednesday Night Market: Black Moon Clay

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – Each Wednesday Night Farmers Market welcomes a lot of creativity down West Washington Street, including miniature ceramics business, Black Moon Clay.

“Black Moon Clay is fairly new, we’ve been in ceramics, mostly miniatures, for a long time under the business name, Annika Smith Arts,” said Co-owner Mike Shelafoe. “Not only ceramics but other things as well.”

Mike and Anika have been ceramicists for years, typically selling their products online. This summer they’ve expanded on that experience by joining the Marquette Farmers Market, sharing their art with the community.

Some of their most popular items are Anika’s miniature 1:12 scale vases and cups, and Mike’s ceramic earrings, all made by hand at their home studio. Mike grew up making Native American earrings with his father, and was able to add his skills to the mix, while also getting into throwing ceramics with his partner.

“I’ve always enjoyed making jewelry, and being able to merge the two together, jewelry and ceramics, has been really cool,” he said.

All socials for Black Moon Clay can be found here.
