MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – The City of Marquette has given a gift to its future residents.
City officials were on hand to watch the burial of Marquette’s latest time capsule.
This is actually the re-burial of a time capsule originally interred in 1999 and recovered last year, revealing an assortment of items from the latter 20th century.
The time capsule being buried today contains items from the last 25 years, such as newspapers, advertising circulars, a couple of locally brewed beers, and yearbooks from area schools, among many other items that represent the early 21st century.
“What should go in here? We wanted to make sure we limit that a little bit, make sure that it was things that could easily be stored, but it’s it was really down to the content of what we think was going to be important 25 years and again, with things that are changing so much, a lot of it was the costs,” said Assistant Director of Community Services, Andrew MacIver
The city took precautions to ensure the integrity of the new time capsule, as some of the previous contents from the 1999 capsule suffered water damage. This new time capsule is due to be opened on July 4th, 2050
