MSP shares safety reminders ahead of Fourth of July celebrations

LANSING, Mich. (WZMQ) — As communities across Michigan prepare for fireworks, cookouts, and travel this Fourth of July, the Michigan State Police (MSP) are reminding residents to celebrate responsibly—both on the road and at home.

While the holiday offers a chance to relax and gather with friends and family, MSP Director Col. James F. Grady II said it’s also a time to stay vigilant.

“We want everybody to have fun, we want them to be safe, and we want them to have a very relaxing holiday. I’m hoping to do that myself,” Grady said. “Enjoy some time with friends and family. I’d just like the opportunity to provide some advice.”

With more drivers expected on Michigan roads, state troopers will be out in force. MSP urges everyone to drive the speed limit, avoid distractions by going hands-free, and follow traffic laws.

Grady emphasized special caution in construction zones, where reduced speed limits are in effect to protect road workers.

“They are out there working, and so we need to be mindful of that,” he said. “We want them to be able to go home safely as well, so please adhere to the construction zone speed limits—normally they are reduced in those construction zone areas.”

For those who plan to drink during the holiday, MSP encourages making a plan ahead of time—whether that means using a designated driver, calling a rideshare service, or staying put.

“If you are going to participate in consuming alcohol, make good decisions out there,” Grady said. “You’ve got multiple resources that are available to you to help you get home safely instead of getting behind the wheel and jeopardizing not only your own life but others as well.”

Beyond the roads, MSP is also reminding residents to handle fireworks with care. Improper use can lead to serious, even fatal, injuries.

“It can be dangerous,” Grady said. “We’ve seen multiple examples over the years of people getting hurt, sometimes fatal injuries occurring. You should never point fireworks at people, a building, or at flammable materials. You just have to be mindful of your surroundings at all times.”

MSP recommends lighting only one firework at a time, keeping a water source close by, and never trying to relight a dud. Children should always be kept at a safe distance.

With a little extra care and planning, MSP hopes all Michiganders can enjoy a safe and memorable Independence Day.
