MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – Two campers were found dead at Isle Royale National Park last week. Their bodies were discovered on June 8 at South Lake Desor campground, after two separate parties reported finding the bodies at this remote campsite.

A Reddit user reported hearing disturbing screams in the area two days earlier, but officials haven’t confirmed if the screams are connected to the deaths. Marquette resident Alex Conklin and a hiking companion were on the island and intended to camp overnight at South Lake Desor, but when they arrived, they were turned back by park rangers.

“Once we got there, park staff told us Hey, you can’t stay here because something happened, so we were kind of dumbfounded by that, but we just kept moving and went and found another place to stay that night. So it was a little bit odd. You’re not coming in contact with rangers that often, but when we were, they told us it was an ongoing investigation, and they were working on it,” said Conklin.

The FBI is now involved in the investigation, along with the National Park Service, which says the two bodies have been identified, but they are not releasing the names or causes of death at this time.

Authorities did say that wild animals were not involved, and the public is in no danger.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the National Park Service.
