GLADSTONE, Mich. (WZMQ) – A group of pickleball enthusiasts is celebrating a dream that has finally become a reality.
In 2023, Gladstone Area Pickleball launched a crowdfunding effort to construct eight dedicated pickleball courts at the John and Melissa Besse Sports Park. The group held a soft opening after the Courts of Dreams were completed last fall.
Now that all the pavilions and amenities are also finished, they have planned a grand opening and ribbon cutting at 4 p.m. on Thursday, June 5. Founding member Janet Shandonay-Beauvais says Gladstone Area Pickleball is excited to give athletes of all ages and skill levels a place to play this rapidly-growing sport.
“It’s bringing people together all at once,” she said. “When we were down in the smaller area in Gladstone, we had to split up in different groups to be able to fit everybody in. Now, we see a lot more people. It’s very social, and we hope this is bringing more of the community out for more exercise.”
The group has organized play times for members Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Club members pay $20 per year to play during that time. One court is always set aside for public use. After 11 a.m., anyone is welcome to play on the courts.
