Visit Manistique’s first Makers Market of the season Saturday, May 24

Last year's Makers Market

MANISTIQUE, Mich. (WZMQ) – This weekend, a summertime event returns to Manistique for its fifth year.

The first Makers Market of the season will be set up next to the Lake Effect Community Arts Center on Saturday, May 24. From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., local artisans will have jewelry, art, baked goods, and other items available for shoppers to purchase.

“We usually have about ten to twenty vendors every year,” said Lake Effect Community Arts Board member Mandy Fierens. “Every show’s a little bit different too; it just depends on who shows up that day. Anyone who makes something is welcome at the market.”

The Makers Market coincides with Manistique’s social district, so shoppers can enjoy beverages from approved bars and restaurants throughout the day. Many downtown businesses will also be holding sidewalk sales during the event.

“It’s a whole downtown event,” Fierens said. “You can grab a drink, look at the stores, and then walk around our lovely Triangle Park as well.”

Money raised from vendor fees goes back into the community, supporting Lake Effect Community Arts programming and events. Fierens says she’s enjoyed watching community support for the Makers Market grow over the years.

“We’re so excited to celebrate our fifth year,” she said. “I think it’s going to be our best year yet. We have a lot of really cool people signed up. It’s been beautiful to see the locals embrace it and then also anybody passing through. They’re just so excited to have something to wander around and explore our beautiful town.”

Three other Makers Markets are scheduled for June 28, July 26, and August 30. To learn more about the market, visit the Makers Market of Manistique Facebook page. Information on these and other upcoming events is available on the Lake Effect Community Arts Facebook page.
