MANISTIQUE, Mich. (WZMQ) – A Manistique gallery is showcasing some of the art being made right here in the Upper Peninsula.
The Lake Effect Community Arts Center called on artists living within 100 miles of Manistique to submit pieces for its new Made U.P. show. For an entry fee of $10, artists ranging from painters and photographers to sculptors and woodworkers could put anything they’ve created on display.
“We’re really excited to have all these people that submitted—way more than we expected!” said Lake Effect Community Arts Board member Mandy Fierens. “We’ve just got so many talented people from our area and I love that we have such a variety here.”
Visitors can vote for their favorite piece. The artist who receives the most votes will win the $100 Peoples Choice Award prize.
Fierens says the idea behind Made U.P. was to give local artists from all walks of life an opportunity to share their work.
“We wanted to make this community-friendly, that anyone could participate, because we value art in all forms,” she said. “It doesn’t have to be your fancy, hoity-toity person; it could be someone off the street, a student. We wanted it to be accessible to anyone that wanted to have their art seen. I mean, how special is that?”
Made U.P. opens with a public reception on Thursday, May 22, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Viewing hours will then coincide with the Lake Effect Gallery’s summer hours, which are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. The show runs until June 7.
