MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Michigan State Police are hitting the road this summer with a statewide tour of Michigan communities, including the UP. “Troopers On Tour” is their premier basketball/cop initiative event, with stops in 11 cities, including, for the first time, Marquette.
MSP director James F Grady II says he will make the trip north himself.
“If you didn’t know, this is the first time we are going to get above the bridge. We’re going to hold this event in Marquette. I’m extremely excited to have the opportunity to make it to the beautiful Upper Peninsula here in Michigan,” said Grady.
The goal of Troopers on Tour is to facilitate dialogue between citizens and the police, to humanize the men and women of the State Police force, and to answer questions about life as a trooper.
“To make them aware of some of the wonderful resources that we provide that can help them when they’re dealing with challenges or adversity,” said Grady.
It’s also an opportunity for police officers to learn more about their community as well.
“It also gives us an opportunity, in turn, to be educated about what’s going on in the community, the questions or concerns that they may have. And so I think that it is a great way to build the bridge and develop partnerships that can again, last forever,” said Grady.
Last year, the tour saw nearly 1000 people come out to meet them; this year, they hope to eclipse that number with more cities added to the list. Troopers on tour will take place on July 17 on the NMU campus. In addition to basketball. The event will feature music, food, and other games for all ages.
