HOUGHTON, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Houghton County Board of Commissioners gathered for a special meeting on Monday, further discussing its options for the county’s new justice center.
The board must submit their request for its projected changes, after the community votes on May 13. This request will include a millage of around 30 million dollars spread across the next 30 years.
Controversy surrounding the millage was also addressed at Monday’s meeting, including from nursing home Canal View, who say their millage funding has been reduced four times since 2003. Even with this, the Houghton County Board Vice-Chairman Roy Britz says this jail system is a top priority.
“I’m not fluffing anything negative about any of them, they’re all entities that need things,” said Britz. “But the jail in my mind has to be at the foremost of the county’s responsibility.”
The board will meet to vote on the proposal on May 13 at 10 a.m.
