Michigan Democrats call for President Trump’s impeachment

LANSING, Mich. (WZMQ) – President Trump celebrated the first 100 days of his presidency in Michigan on Tuesday. During his address, he listed his administration’s approach to deportation of illegal immigrants, cuts to federal funding and employment, and investments into mining and fracking as achievements, though many Americans disagree.

As President Trump celebrated, Democrats in Michigan’s House of Representatives filed a resolution calling for his impeachment. Representative Dylan Wegala introduced the legislation, citing the detainment and deportation of immigrants as an abuse of power.

The resolution was referred to the House Committee on Government Operations. However, House Republicans passed a different resolution commending President Trump, his accomplishments, and the recent investments at Selfridge.

Still, Democrats are pushing for accountability. Just Monday, the congressman from Detroit, Representative Shri Thanedar, introduced articles of impeachment to the U.S. House of Representatives. The lawmakers are citing a sweeping abuse of power, flagrant violations of the constitution, and actions that undermine democracy and threaten the rule of law.

Wegela said he is excited to see the introduction and plans to continue raising red flags and pushing other lawmakers to take action.

“People need to apply pressure if they care about this. Calling their Representatives, protesting, and boycotting.” Wegela said. “It is our duty to stand up for our constituents, and people are super worried. I think current polling on impeachment right now suggests that over 50% of people in this country believe the president should be impeached. That is a historically high number, and I think it’s time we start listening to the people.

There is a long road ahead for any of the actions calling for President Trump’s impeachment. Democratic legislators said they are ready to put in the work and see that justice is achieved.
