MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ)—This evening, the Marquette City Commission heard from dozens of citizens.
The commission chambers were packed with people opposed to a proposed ordinance banning camping in the city.
On the agenda was a conversational new proposed ordinance aimed at stopping people from camping on city property. If passed, it would make it illegal to stay on city property overnight.
This proposed ordinance would make it an offence to sleep overnight in a car or any other temporary dwelling.
In addition, it gave the police broad powers to seize the property of those in violation. The ordinance was tabled until the city staff could clarify the law and put in safeguards so as not to unduly target homeless people.
The commission also set in motion efforts to construct a year-round off-leash dog park, something that has been wanted by the community for years, according to many surveys.
