ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – A Holy Name Catholic School student is advancing to the state level of a patriotic writing competition.
Thousands of eighth graders from nearly 200 Michigan schools entered the 2024 – 2025 America & Me Essay Contest, sponsored by Farm Bureau Insurance of Michigan. Three Holy Name students placed in the local round of the contest, with Mara Bradfield taking third, Kinsley Williams placing second, and Kinley Hastings earning first place.

This year’s topic was “My Personal Michigan Hero.” Hastings chose her “Grandpa” Charlie as her hero. Although he is not a blood relative, Hastings says he has always been someone she’s looked up to.
“Even though he didn’t have to be in our lives or anything, he just kind of stepped in as a grandpa position,” she explained. “He was always really nice to us.”
While serving in the Air Force, Charlie was exposed to agent Agent Orange. Now, he’s battling a cancer diagnosis.
“His health has just been going downhill a lot,” said Hastings. “He’s pushing through it.”
Hastings did not expect to be chosen as the first place winner.
“It surprised me,” she said. She then laughed, “I was very shocked because normally I’m not the best at writing! It means a lot.”
In recognition of her win, Hastings’ name will be engraved on a plaque on display at Holy Name. Her essay now moves on to the state level of the competition. The top ten essays will be selected in April, and each writer will receive a plaque, a medallion, and $1,000 in cash. Farm Bureau Insurance will also give each winner’s school a $1,000 check.
