ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – The City of Escanaba is making progress on redevelopment projects that will bring new businesses to the area.
On Thursday, the City’s Brownfield Redevelopment Authority approved an amendment to a plan for the former Dunham’s Sports site, located inside the Delta Plaza Mall. The site has been unoccupied since Dunham’s moved to its current location behind Marshall’s.
While the City does not know which organization is looking to use the vacant space, negotiations are underway between the mall and a potential “national tenant.”
“The mall’s done a really good job of filling all their spaces and really, you know, reorganizing to make that all happen,” said City Manager Jim McNeil. “The City of Escanaba Brownfield Authority has really been pretty active over the last couple years, really instrumental in the mall, The Lofts project, and along our north shore. Now, you have MSHDA Housing TIF too that can run through our Brownfield Authority. We’re eager to see some proposals for that in the future, and we’re showing that we’re very capable of handling this kind of project.”
The Brownfield Redevelopment Authority also met with representatives from Kwik Trip, the fuel station and convenience store chain taking over the former Super One lot on North Lincoln Road. Kwik Trip is set to start its first physical work on the property in the coming weeks.
