To bring Marquette County's off road vehicle rules more in line with those of the state the Marquette County Board approved some changes to its current ORV laws.

New rules for ORV use on county roads approved by Marquette County Board

NEGAUNEE TWP, Mich. (WZMQ) – To bring Marquette County’s off-road vehicle rules more in line with the state’s, the Marquette County Board approved some changes to its current ORV laws. The most significant changes allow greater access to the trail system by allowing ORV operators to travel on county roads in certain areas. Sheriff’s Lieutenant Errol Lukkarinen says this will make going from one trail network to another easier.

The big thing is it allows operators, to go to and from a trail and to use their RVs on a far-right portion of the roadway,” said Lt. Lukkarinen.

Lukkarinen pointed out that although allowed on some roadways, these vehicles are not built for roads.

“They still are ORV’s. They’re designed for off-road travel. They’re not designed for roadway traffic,” said Lukkarinen.

With the growing popularity of more elaborate vehicles, like side-by-sides. The county’s new ordinance addresses the use of seat belts, roll cages, and windshields.

“And as long as you have an approved roll cage and you are wearing your seat belt, you do not have to wear a D O T approved helmet and eye protection. As long as your side by side, has a windshield,” said Lukkarinen.

Above all, safety is the most important aspect of operating an O R V, proper training, being responsible, and riding within your abilities are essential.

“Number one is to make sure you have a safety certificate, go to some type of safety course. We provide them from the sheriff’s office through The Department of Natural Resources,” explained Lukkarinen.
