MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – St. Paul’s Episcopal Church of Marquette has been awarded a $135,000 matching grant from the National Fund for Sacred Places (NFSP). The money will go towards repairing damaged parts of the original sandstone, applying water sealant to protect the building, and restoring some of its stained glass windows.
“This building was built in 1875,” said Fred Cole, a member of the congregation. “So it’s the 150th anniversary, and it’s nice to show it a little love, with repair and restoration.” The church applied for the matching grant in 2024. Out of nearly 500 congregations of all faiths throughout the country that applied, St. Paul’s was one of only 24 recipients.
“It’s a one to one match grant, so for every dollar they provide we have to match that,” said Cole. The congregation is seeking to raise about $150,000 to match the grant. To do this, many fundraising events are planned throughout the year, including a concert on March 30th.
The preservation work will begin this summer, with the overall goal of completing the projects by fall of 2026. To learn more about the projects and upcoming events, visit their Facebook page.
