ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – On Tuesday, Delta County residents gathered on the corner of Ludington Street and North Lincoln Road to host a protest.
Protestors carried signs about a range of political issues, including veteran healthcare, Medicare, Social Security, and Elon Musk’s role in the government. Jerry Nelson of Bark River said one of his reasons for protesting was the current state of democracy in America.
“Our freedoms are being eroded, and people don’t seem to realize that,” he said. “I’ve traveled extensively and I’ve been in countries that have dictatorships, and I know exactly what they’re like. They work on fear and intimidation, and that’s what we’ve got going on today.”
For Nelson, the war in Ukraine is another major concern. His sign read, “Freedom, Democracy, Support Ukraine.” One driver waved a Ukrainian flag as they drove by.
“The Ukrainians are being trampled on by a country that is four times larger than them, as far as population,” said Nelson. “We don’t even hear anything about them, or very little.”
Nelson said the protestors wanted to show the community that they stand for freedom, democracy, and liberty.
