MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ)
Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist recently visited the U.P. to sit down over breakfast with other legislators and educational leaders to discuss the needs of students and teachers. In attendance with Gilchrist were Senator Ed McBroom, and State Representatives Dave Prestin, Karl Bohnak, Luke Meerman, Jason Morgan, and John Roth.
Educational leaders from around the state joined for the conference including many by Zoom. The breakfast serves as a great opportunity for educators to express the needs of their district. Superintendent Tom McKee expressed that many U.P. communities have similar wants and needs.
“Whether you’re from Rudyard or from Ironwood the goals are making sure our kids get equitable services and are given the best. Collectively the U.P. would like to see more support in some of our students who have additional needs, whether that is day treatment centers or just providing the resources that all our kids need.”
After the discussion, State Senator Ed McBroom felt that both sides better understood the complexities of desired changes such as consolidation and grant funding.
“I think we recognized the complexities of the jobs of our educators and their leadership, the complexities of us at the state, and the complexities that we have here in the U.P.”
