NEGAUNEE, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Meijer State Games of Michigan are coming to the UP on February 7. The games will feature athletes from all over the country to compete in a variety of sports like archery, swimming, bowling, judo, and many more.
This year the State Games have partnered with Negaunee’s Heikki Lunta Winter Festival for the skiing/snowboarding rail jam which is also on February 7. The opening ceremony of the State Games will also be in Negaunee.
Courtney Miner the State Games event coordinator said they’re excited to keep bringing the opportunity to compete to UP residents.
“We weren’t catering to our fellow Yoopers,” said Miner. “It’s a far drive. We came up from Grand Rapids so we know how far of a drive that is, so instead of asking them to come to us we decided to come to them and make sure that they have an opportunity to participate in the sports that they also know and love.”
