ISHEPMING, Mich. (WZMQ) – The 138th annual Ishpeming Ski Club Ski Jump Tournament began on Friday evening at the famous Suicide Hill in Ishpeming.
The Nordic ski jump tournament includes skiers under 20 years old from all over the US competing for the U.S. Nordic Cup.
Beyond two days of ski jumping, the tournament includes tailgating, food trucks, huge bonfires and even fireworks on Saturday night.
Ishpeming Ski Club Vice President Peter Copenhaver said the ski jump at suicide hill is historic, “Lot of people don’t know that Ishpeming Michigan is the birthplace of organized skiing, there’s a reason why the hall of fame is here,” said Copenhaver. “We have a rich tradition of Nordic skiing here at the Ishpeming ski club since 1887 we’ve put on a tournament every year through pandemics, recessions, world wars, we’ve put ono a tournament every year nothing has ever hampered us.”
