ONTONAGON COUNTY, Mich. – The Michigan State Police Wakefield Post has been informed of an approximate 40-inch-high ice heave running east to west across Lake Gogebic, about 2 miles south of Ontonagon County Park. If you are planning to enjoy ice fishing, snowmobiling, or other winter activities, please exercise caution.
On Jan. 10, a trooper from the Wakefield Post responded to a report of a snowmobile that went through the ice on the lake around 10:30 p.m. The rider and snowmobile were safely retrieved by others in the group she was riding with. While the rider was uninjured, she was quickly rushed to a nearby location to warm up.
According to DNR personnel, two more snowmobilers broke through the ice last night, and another incident occurred recently. There have not been any fatalities. There have been four people total in the past few days who have gone through the ice on Lake Gogebic.
Always check ice thickness with a spud or auger. Avoid cracks, heaves, or open water. If possible, ride with a group, carry a communication device, wear cold-weather gear, and carry safety equipment such as ice picks/claws.
If you are heading out onto the ice, your safety is your responsibility. Ice conditions can change, so stay alert and stay safe. The strongest ice is clear with a bluish tint, while weak ice is formed by melted and refrozen snow and appears milky.
