WASHINGTON, D.C. (WZMQ 19 NEWS) — The state funeral for former President Jimmy Carter was held today at the National Cathedral in Washington.
All five living presidents: Presidents Bill Clinton, George Bush, Barack Obama, Donald Trump and Joe Biden were in attendance.
Carter lied in state at the U.S. Capitol from Tuesday through Thursday morning. Members of the public and members of Congress had a chance to pay their respects.
“I was honored to pay my respects to President Jimmy Carter at his funeral today. He led with compassion, and his legacy will serve as an example for Americans for generations to come,” said Sen. Gary Peters (D- MI).
The 39th President is remembered for his dedication to serving others as a passionate humanitarian and a pioneer of human rights. Lawmakers, even those who disagreed with Carter politically, like Congressman Jack Bergman (R- MI), say Carter’s legacy will live on.
“Jimmy Carter was a good Christian man. He was a family man who had very strong beliefs. Only history tells, as it looks in hindsight, as to how a person did in a role at the time,” said Bergman in an interview with WZMQ 19 News.
Following today’s state funeral, the casket of the 39th President was transferred back to his home state of Georgia where he will be laid to rest.
