MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – With the New Year here, resolutions are being made, and why not try a new hobby for the New Year? Hot Plate Pottery offers workshops for participants to come in, learn, and try throwing clay on a wheel.
This workshop costs $48 and is a two-hour class that starts with a Demo and hands-on help from the instructor. You get multiple chances to throw as many pieces as you like to see how much improvement is made from the first throw. You also have the chance to glaze one piece you selected; you may take more than one piece with an additional charge of $10.
This shop opened 7 years ago with only 4 wheels. Years later, the workshops have grown to 9 wheels and participants. The shop owner and course instructor shared how this project started as a way for her to get back in touch with art and spread the love with others.
“I had the chance to bring those wheels in and kinda do the thing I love then offer that to other people to try it, just because there isn’t really a place to try the pottery wheel here and I know it’s on a lot of people’s bucket lists,” Melissa Sprouse, Hotplate Pottery owner and course instructor.
These classes take place 3 times a month, with at least one on a weekend. There is also a 6-week wheel class for those with a peaked interest after the workshop.
