LANSING, Mich. (WZMQ) – The funding for the Copperwood mine was left out of legislation approved in Michigan’s Senate today. The Senate Committee for Appropriations met this afternoon to take a vote on two fund transfer requests.
Transfer Request 2025-2 was approved by the House Appropriations Committee last week. Request 2025-2 originally included funding for the Dow Chemical Company and Highland Copper, the Canadian company that owns the mine, but the committee voted to approve the request only in part.
Appropriations awarded $120 million to Dow Chemical, leaving the $50 million for site readiness on the Copperwood project behind. The committee now has less than two months to vote on the grant or the request will have failed for a second time.
