MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Marquette Parks and Recreation Department is moving forward on a new proposed amendment to a city ordinance that would ban dogs from city playgrounds.
The ban is meant to stop dog waste from contaminating wood chips and play safe material and to prevent potentially dangerous interactions between children and dogs.
The Parks and Recreation department had a public meeting last night where they took public input and cleared up several public concerns, “Some people had a misconstrued view thinking that we were banning dogs in parks and that was not what was actually going on, we’re just looking at playgrounds,” said Assistant Director of Community Services for the City of Marquette Andrew MacIver. “We got a lot of that cleared up last night and a lot of people after that were saying yeah that seems like a logical idea.”
McIver said Parks and Recreation is working on the wording of the proposed amendment currently and hopes to have it sent to the city council for voting by summer time.
