Even though it seems like it was just Labor Day last week, I guess we’re now officially in the holiday season.
The days are getting shorter, the turkey leftovers are finally gone, and all the Christmas lights your neighbor put up are actually brighter than our afternoon sun.
It’s also the time of the year when we start to hear Christmas songs.
A LOT of Christmas songs.
And that got me to thinking: is there the perfect Christmas song for the UP? I mean, there are so many contenders, but they all may have one or two things working against them.
As examples, I can see why people in the Copper Country might have something against “Silver & Gold,” “Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer” was only funny the first 8,000 times you heard it, and I don’t think that after the past few days ANYONE in the UP wants to hear “Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow.”
So maybe the answer lies in adapting an all time classic. Don’t worry– I’ve done a little research, and I think I may have come up with the solution.
Now, I’m not the world’s greatest singer, so I’ll spare you the musical version– you’re welcome, by the way– but here’s how the last verse of “The Yooper 12 Days of Christmas” might go. Ready?
On the 12th day of Christmas, my Yooper gave to me…
12 nasty deer camps
11 football losses
10 tourists whining
9 ore boats boating
8 sled dogs racing
7 highway slowdowns
6 pair of swampers
5 car deer wrecks
4 frosty 6-packs
3 Great Lakes
2 Kevin Hodges
And a pasty in a pear tree.
Now you’re wishing I actually did sing it, aren’t you?
But there you go, my suggestion for the official Christmas song of the UP. Well, either that, or “Rusty Chevrolet.” I’ll let you choose.
