Second U.P. school district responds to claims of male student saying “your body, my choice” to female student

ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – New information has been released about a report of a male high school student saying “your body, my choice” to females in Escanaba.

According to an Escanaba Public Safety report, which WZMQ 19 obtained through a FOIA request, several school districts were at Bay College for an event on Wednesday, November 13. Bay College has previously stated that the gathering was a “third-party hosted event.”

The Public Safety report states that a parent of an Escanaba High School student told officials “a boy turned around and told [her daughter] ‘your body, my choice.'” That parent is the same individual who made a social media post claiming a male student at Escanaba High said the phrase the day after the election.

A responding officer spoke with a male student, who said several high schoolers were having a political discussion when a male student from Mid Peninsula High School “jokingly” directed the phrase to a female student. The report says, “There was a couple other people who think they heard the statement.” The officer also interviewed the daughter of the parent who made the call, who said she did not hear the male student “actually say it.”

WZMQ 19 reached out to Mid Peninsula Superintendent Eric VanDamme for comment on the situation. VanDamme said the district is “aware of the allegations” and of Escanaba Public Safety’s investigation.

“With any report of student misconduct, Mid Peninsula School completes a comprehensive investigation and implements appropriate disciplinary action in accordance with our school handbook and policies,” said VanDamme.

The Public Safety report shows that no further action is being taken, “as there is nothing criminal in nature.”

Escanaba High School’s investigation into the similar claim made earlier this month has also been closed. Click here for the full story.
