High school seniors explore college opportunities at “Bay is the Way Day”

ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – On Friday, more than 150 high schoolers from across the U.P. visited Bay College for the annual Bay is the Way Day.

“It’s an event for high school seniors who are interested in Bay, considering Bay, maybe they’re for sure coming to Bay, or maybe those in between who don’t really know yet,” said Jessica Beaver, Director of Admissions. “It’s kind of an action-packed, crazy day, hopefully with a lot of learning as well.”

Seniors heard from current Bay College students about their experiences, toured the campus, had lunch at Cafe Bay, and learned about their top three programs of study from faculty members.

“They get to learn more about that major, to make sure it’s the right fit for them, better understand the classes that they would take for that major, get to be in a college setting in a college classroom,” Beaver said.

They also received critical information about financial aid opportunities.

“We want to make sure they understand the FAFSA, the grants that they might be eligible for,” said Beaver. “We’re definitely going to talk about that Michigan Community College Guarantee, which is huge.”

Beaver says Bay wants to make college work for every student, no matter their stage of life.

“We really are here for students and their success,” she said. “Maybe you’re graduating high school, maybe you’re in your 60s, maybe you’re a mom and you didn’t get to finish school and you want to come back to school. We want to at least be a place where people can get their start so that they can be successful in whatever that looks like for them.”

Beaver says the goal of Friday’s event was to help students decide if Bay really is the way for them.

“If you’re on the fence about college, hopefully today puts that nail in the coffin that college is for you and Bay is here for you,” she said.

Prospective students can apply to Bay College at any time. However, they are encouraged to take that first step as soon as soon as they’re ready to get a head start on the process.
