MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ)—On Saturday, Marquette Moutain hosted the first annual cheese roll. Nine men and women raced down Marquette Mountain to either cross the finish line first or catch the cheese. Marquette’s Everyday Wine provided the star of the show the cheese roll, as well as cheese samples for viewers to enjoy.
This event is a UK tradition dating back to 1826 when the first written documentation was made. Originally part of the Cooper’s Hill wake, the Cheese Rolling has spread to Marquette.
The event starts with racers chasing after a roll of cheese, whoever is the first to cross the finish line or catch the cheese. Now like this year’s race, whoever catches the cheese wins, no matter who crosses the line finish line first.
“All it takes is you just need to register and then be really brave or really crazy one of the other, or both,” said Kate Johnson, Marquette Mountain General Manager.
