Delta County Cancer Alliance’s inaugural Pink Fest wraps up at Chenier’s Reef

ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – On Thursday, the Delta County Cancer Alliance wrapped up an inaugural fundraising event for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Pink Fest was held at three Delta County bars on the first three Thursdays of October. Patrons played games, enjoyed specialty pink beverages, entered raffles, and learned about the work the Cancer Alliance does in the community.

The final Pink Fest event was hosted by Chenier’s Reef. Owner Carol Chenier said she was excited to see such a large crowd turn out to support the cause.

“We thought it was a great idea,” she said. “With cancer on the rise, everybody knows somebody that has it in our families nowadays. I think it’s a wonderful event, and we need to find a cure.”

Attendees also voted in the Bras for a Cause decorating contest, a partnership between the Cancer Alliance and the Daily Press. Local businesses and organizations put feathers, rhinestones, and anything else they could think of on their bras to win the pay-to-vote competition.

Members of the East Ludington Gallery decorated theirs to look like an owl.

“We also looked at belly dancing bras, so from that, this evolved,” said Diane Kribs-Mays, referring to the bra pictured below.

For Kribs-Mays and fellow East Ludington Gallery member Teresa Ross, breast cancer awareness is an issue close to their hearts. When they heard about the contest, they knew they wanted to be part of it.

“We have a couple artists at East Ludington Gallery who have dealt with breast cancer, whether it was themselves or a family member,” Ross said. “We wanted to honor them by entering this.”

“…And to contribute to the Cancer Alliance,” Kribs-May added. “That was the main reason, to support people who need help fighting cancer.”

Prior to the final event at Chenier’s Reef, Pink Fest brought in approximately $5,000 to help people in Delta County facing a cancer diagnosis.
