MICHIGAMME, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Michigamme Twp. Park is celebrating 50 years of delighting kids of all ages with a very special ribbon cutting.

The Twp clerk from 1974 did the honors of cutting the ribbon celebrating the renewal of the Michigamme Twp park. Jean Howe was instrumental in getting this facility up and running

“We had so many people working with us that helped in that. And we came down here, this area would just swap, swap, and brush,” said Howe.

The Michigamme Twp Park has been nestled on the shores of Lake Michigamme for over half a century. In 1974 a group of Twp officials set out to build a park for their community. They wanted to provide basketball courts, a baseball diamond, tennis courts, and a playground on seven acres of Twp land close to the town beach. After securing a grant from the Michigan DNR, the lakeside park became a reality.

Every community member has contributed to this park, starting from the 70s to the current time. Now, every person that was standing here has done one thing or another to make this park the way it is today,” said Frisk.

Now 50 years later the park is having a rebirth with substantial improvements throughout the park Michigamme Twp trustee Kathleen Frisk says that this is truly a community effort.

We have revitalized what they have started by beautification would be a nice way to put it, the tennis courts are all new, including pickleball, and also with the basketball courts with ADA-compliant parking,” stated Frisk.
