IRON MOUNTAIN, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Dickinson County Prosecutor dropped charges Wednesday against an Iron Mountain who was facing a felony for allegedly making threats against a local school district.
In September 2023, 30-year-old Kyle Holmberg was charged with one count of False Report of Terrorism, a felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison and a fine up to $20,000, after police said he allegedly made threats against the Kingsford Public School District.
During his initial court hearing, it was revealed police recovered multiple guns, including an AR-style rifle, and ammunition from his home.
County prosecutor Lisa Richards dismissed the charges Wednesday, citing a high burden of proof at a criminal trial, “much higher than the standard for arrest.” According to a press release from the prosecutor’s office, the decision to dismiss the charges in this case is a reflection of the inability to meet that burden of proof.
“The investigators left no stone unturned and for that, I am grateful,” said Richards in a statement. “The investigation simply did not result in sufficient evidence to present the case to a jury.”
If new evidence comes to light within the applicable statute of limitations, the prosecutor’s office can reauthorize charges.
The prosecutor’s office says school threats and reports of threats will be taken very seriously. Richards encourages the public to remain vigilant in reporting this type of speech to the appropriate authorities.
