MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – As the election approaches Michigan’s elected officials are making their way to the UP.
On Thursday evening, Governor Gretchen Whitmer held a “Grillin’ with Gretchen” rally to encourage Yoopers to vote democrat this November.
“I’m so happy to be back and so happy to be with you, and back with my friend Jenn Hill,” said Whitmer. “I was here two years ago this same time, and we knew how important getting out and voting was and it is just as important if not more this year.”
The rally at the Jacobetti Complex featured yard games like Ladder Ball and Cornhole and had food from two popular Marquette food trucks.
During her speech Whitmer praised the work of Representative Jenn Hill who was also in attendance.
“There’s so much opportunity up here that as happened because of the investments that Jenn Hill has been able to secure for the Upper Peninsula,” said Whitmer. “So that’s why we wanted to make sure people know Jenn Hill works her tail off for this community, she loves this community, and this community needs her to go back to Lansing.”
Whitmer also emphasized the importance of voting in state and local elections as well as national.
“We got to vote the whole ticket because every one of these offices matters,” said Whitmer. “Whether it is the most local of offices in your township or in your city, or it is your state legislators, or it is who is in the White House.”
And both Whitmer and Hill said the the UP matters in this election.
“It’s recognized how much we are contributing, the people, our economy, our education system is vital to the future of Michigan,” said Hill. “That’s why the state-wide leaders are here to show that support.”
Whitmer was joined by Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist II.
